Robotic Total Hip Replacement Surgery in Dogs
نویسندگان
چکیده
Approximately half of the over 120,000 total hip replacement operations performed annually in the United States use cementless implants. The standard method for preparing the femoral cavity for such implants uses a mallet-driven hand-held broach whose shape matches that of (he desired implant. In-vitro experiments have supported the possibility (ha( a more accurate (and, we expect, more efficacious) result can be achieved by using a robot to machine the cavity. We are now developing a second-generation system suitable for use in an operating room, targeted at clinical trials on dogs needing hip implants. This summary describes the background, objectives, architecture, and surgical procedure for this system. It also provides brief descriptions of key results from our earlier experiments and of some of our planned future work.

An image-directed robotic system for precise orthopaedic surgery
We have developed an image-directed robotic system to augment the performance of human surgeons in precise bone machining procedures in orthopaedic surgery, initially targeted at cementless total hip replacement surgery. The total system consists of an interactive CT-based presurgical planning component and a surgical system consisting of a robot, redundant motion monitoring, and man-machine in...
متن کاملTotal Hip Replacement Revision in a Single Brand Small Cementless Stem – Our Experience after the Findings of the National Joint Registry
Background: Cementless total hip replacement is the common THR performed in England, Wales, Northern Irelandand the Isle of Man. The Corail stem is the most popular cementless implant and has a ODEP 10A rating. Review ofits performance in the registry identified an increase rate of revision amongst the smaller stem sizes. However, claritywas not provided on the explanation for this finding. We ...
متن کاملPosition Control of BIGSS Lab Snake for Revision Total Hip Arthroplasty (THA) Surgery
The BIGSS lab is developing a minimally-invasive surgical workstation to treat the osteolytic lesions using using a snake like dexterous manipulator (SDM). The SDM will be positioned in the workspace by a robotic arm. The focus of this project is integrating the SDM with the robotic armwhich is a 6 DOF Universal Robot (UR5) and position control of the tip of the SDM inside the lesion area.
متن کاملRobotic systems in orthopaedic surgery.
Robots have been used in surgery since the late 1980s. Orthopaedic surgery began to incorporate robotic technology in 1992, with the introduction of ROBODOC, for the planning and performance of total hip replacement. The use of robotic systems has subsequently increased, with promising short-term radiological outcomes when compared with traditional orthopaedic procedures. Robotic systems can be...
متن کاملAssessing the dog as a model for human total hip replacement. Analysis of 38 canine cemented femoral components retrieved at post-mortem.
Post-mortem retrieval of canine, cemented femoral components was analysed to assess the performance of these implants in the dog as a model for human total hip replacement (THR). Mechanical testing and radiological analysis were performed to determine the stability of the implant and the quality of the cement. Thirty-eight implants from 29 dogs were retrieved after time intervals ranging from 0...
